SIOUX CITY, IA: The seventh annual Siouxland Community Health Center’s 5K affords Siouxland area residents an opportunity to get a little exercise and raise some much-needed funds for their favorite area high school.

The “Be True to Your School 5K” unfolds Saturday, August 20 at Adams Homestead Nature Preserve in McCook Lake, SD. Race day check-in will begin at 7 a.m. with the race and walk scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. This year’s walk/race is being sponsored by Mercy Medical Center.

The “Be True to Your School 5K” is designed to promote a healthy and active community and features a Siouxland High School Challenge in which the area high school with the most participants will receive $1,000 for first place, $750 for second place and $500 for third place. All 5K participants, students and adults, will be asked to declare a school at registration. The cash awards will go to the school’s athletic department to support their programs.

Last year’s top-prize winner was Bishop Heelan Catholic School’s who won $1,000. East High finished second and received $750 and Dakota Valley schools won $500.

High school students who are interested in being a part of their school’s team should contact their respective school’s athletic director for registration information. Medals will also be given to the top three finishers in adult men and women and youth 18 and under men and women.

Registration fees for the event are $25 for adults and $10 for youth and students of all ages. All those who register by August 12 will receive an event t-shirt. Pre-registration is encouraged. Walk-up registrations will also be accepted the day of the event beginning at 7 a.m. Proceeds from the 7th Annual Be True to Your School 5K Challenge will be used to support the needs of patients who receive their care from the Siouxland Community Health Center.
