Siouxland Community Health Center and Unity-Point Health Join Forces for Walk With a Doc

Written by Jessica Krieg on . Posted in News

SIOUX CITY, IA: – The Siouxland Community Health Center first introduced Walk With a Doc to the community in 2013. The physician-led weekly walk has been held at a number of venues including the Sioux City riverfront, various Sioux City neighborhoods, Western Iowa Tech Community College and Bacon Creek Park. Beginning January 6, Walk With a Doc moves to its new winter home – Unity Point – Health – St. Luke’s.

St. Luke’s has a very popular tunnel system that is well known to area walkers. In an effort to afford walkers a pleasant winter walking environment, St. Luke’s is joining forces with the Siouxland Community Health Center to host Walk With a Doc over the winter and early spring months effective with the first weekly walk of the New Year on January 6.

Walk With a Doc is a national non-profit organization whose mission is to encourage healthy physical activity in people of all ages, and reverse the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle in order to improve the health and well-being of the country. It was started by a Pittsburgh cardiologist who wanted to find a fun way to get his patients involved in an exercise program. Since then, it has expanded to nearly all fifty states and five foreign countries.

Walks will be held every Wednesday beginning at 5:30 p.m. Walkers are asked to gather in the St. Luke’s atrium located along Stone Park Boulevard. The walk will begin from the atrium precisely at 5:30 p.m. and will be preceded by a short presentation from a physician. Dr. Michael Piplani, the Chief Medical Officer of the Siouxland Community Health Center, will begin each walk with a short presentation on the health benefits of a good walk. The physician-led walks will take approximately 45 minutes but walkers are enouraged to walk whatever time and distance they prefer. At times during the winter, physicians from St. Luke’s or one of their affiliated partners will lead the Wednesday Walk With a Doc.

SCHC 5K Just Around the Corner

Written by Jessica Krieg on . Posted in News

You have to be old to appreciate this. The year was 1963. (I was eleven!) The Beach Boys were just coming into their own. Here is a stanza of one of their hits.

So be true to your school (Rah rah rah rah sis boom bah)

Just like you would to your girl or guy

(Rah rah rah rah sis boom bah)

Be true to your school now

(Rah rah rah rah sis boom bah)

Let your colors fly

(Rah rah rah rah sis boom bah)

Be true to your school

(Rah rah rah rah rah)
I loved the Beach Boys but this wasn’t one of their solid gold hits….nonetheless, it’s pure SoCal.

As we started our preparation work for this year’s SCHC 5K, we were searching for a theme. My marketing colleague Cara (who is really good at this stuff for an analyst/planning geek floated the idea of using the old Beach Boys song “Be True to Your School” as our hook. Good call.

SCHC awards cash prizes to the three high schools that send the most participants to the 5K. Last year Heelan won $1,000 – Sgt. Bluff earned $750 and Dakota Valley got a check for $500. We will be doing the same this year.

The price is reasonable. $10 for students and $25 for non-students….and that includes a t-shirt if you register before August 14. You can register on line or by calling Jessica at 712-224-1803.

Oops….the date and location.

Saturday, August 22nd, at Adams Nature Preserve in McCook Lake. Registration begins at 7 (if you haven’t pre-registered) and the race starts at 8.

See you there.

A New Twist on an Old Standard

That’s what the Siouxland Community Health Foundation is doing with this year’s 5K Race / Run. The number of charity runs in Siouxland has grown faster than those orange cones in a construction zone. If you are so inclined, serious runners could find an event every weekend.

This year, we’re trying something different. As the grandparent of a 4-year old boy, I know all I need to know about Superman, Batman and all of the other action figurines. This year we are giving all of the big boys and girls an opportunity to suit up as their favorite Superhero and toe the line at the Superhero 5K Run/Walk on August 23rd. Better yet, we’re providing cash prizes to the best individual and group in costume.

You won’t be competing with me this year. I’m going to do the 5K Walk but really have no interest in dressing up in costume. I already consider myself a finely-tuned machine and hate to mess with perfection. (Insert your own joke at your risk.)

I hope you can join us. We need the money.

Registration is just $25 or adults and $10 for youth and students. That includes a very attractive event t-shirt that will one day be safely ensconced in the t-shirt Hall of Fame. You can register on-line at www.slandchc.com or call race expert Jessica at 224-1803.

Bring your “A” game.

Walk With a Doc Returns to the Riverfront!

Written by Jessica Krieg on . Posted in News

Who’s ready for spring?

Time to break out the Nike’s and the Spandex (let’s be reasonable with the Spandex please) and join Dr. Danielle Prince for a stroll along the beautiful Sioux City riverfront.

It’s all part of the Siouxland Community Health Center’s Walk With a Doc program, a national initiative to get everyone moving towards better health.

It’s all very simple.

The date is Thursday, May 22nd.

The walk will start at 5:30 and leave from the parking lot at Bev’s on the River.

Dr. Prince will lead the group on the walk. You can go as long and as far as you like although most walkers will step off 3 to 4 miles.

There is no fee involved.

Better yet, all walkers get a free Walk With a Doc t-shirt courtesy of the Siouxland Community Health Center.

Dr. Prince is our “doc”. My advice is to keep up with her pace and bring your healthcare questions with you and fire away. It’s like a visit to the doctor without the co-pay!

We would love to have you join us May 22nd for the recreational walk. It would really help if we knew you were coming so we have enough t-shirts for everyone. You can register on-line or via e-mail to Jessica at jdemke@slandchc.com
If those two options don’t work, pick up the phone and call Jessica at 712-224-1803.
